To leave the hustle and hassles of daily life far behind, this traditional stone cottage has the most peaceful setting, surrounded by the swaying sunflowers, maize fields and vineyards of the Charente countryside. Without even venturing beyond the gate, families have over 1000 square metres of land all to themselves, to pluck juicy kiwis in a private walled garden, relax by a heated pool and have teddy bear picnics in an orchard of fruit trees.
After a blissful holiday to this quiet corner of France back in 2012, British couple, Richard and Victoria knew they’d have to be back soon and just 6 months later they bought Le Beau Fief to have plenty more leisurely lunches in medieval towns, picnics by the river and sunny bike rides along scenic country lanes. They lovingly renovated the cottage to keep its rustic charm, with whitewashed stone walls and stripped wood floors, but also furnished and finished it off to luxurious boutique standards, with cool grey colour schemes and all mod cons, including Wi Fi. In the open plan living room, kids can sink into big squashy sofas to watch TV or a DVD by a wood burner while grown-ups linger at the table with a coffee or local wine. The French country kitchen is well equipped for family self-catering and the gite opens onto a private gravel patio for eating outdoors and sizzling up suppers on the barbecue.
With the Charente being second only to the Cote d’Azur for sunshine, everyone will be happy having lazy days by the pool which is heated and 1.3 metres deep all the way across, as well as fenced and lockable for parental peace of mind. Children’s pottery sessions is a fun optional extra, for little ones to make and decorate their own ceramic souvenir and foodies can learn a few secrets of French cuisine with cookery lessons from a professional chef.

Location Information
Le Beau Fief has a totally tranquil setting, deep in the scenic Charente countryside of sunflower fields, vineyards and open farmland. About halfway down the west coast of France, it’s second only to the Cote d’Azur as one of the sunniest regions, with long dry summers and short sharp winters. The quiet country roads around the gite are perfect for exploring the area on bikes and there are several mountain bikes for families to borrow.
Just 13 houses make up the tiny hamlet of Le Grand Fief and in perfectly French style, a local baker delivers fresh baguettes several times a week, letting everyone know he’s here with a toot of his horn. There are several bars, restaurants, shops and a supermarket in the market town of Aulnay de Saintonge, 10 minutes’ drive from the gite and nothing could be a tastier take-away than one of the herby spit roast chickens from the Sunday market.
The lovely old town of Saint Jean d'Angely is only 20 minutes’ drive, with a historic abbey, half-timbered houses and one of the best markets in the region. The town also has a superb aquatics centre with swimming pools, whirlpools, a 54-metre waterslide, sauna, steam rooms and sun terrace, or families can have a picnic by a lake, with a playground, pedalos and mini golf. Just 10 minutes from the gite, near Dampierre sur Boutonne, little ones will love to pet the super cute and shaggy donkeys at the Poitou Donkey Sanctuary and maybe have a ride on a tractor pulled by donkeys. Another nice little attraction, 30 minutes’ from Le Beau Fief, is the Port Miniature of Saint-Savinien, where children can sail an amazing fleet of mini boats, steamers and ferries around a lake.
An hour away, the Chocolaterie Letuffe at Angouleme offers Willy Wonky style tours of the factory and 90-minute workshops to make and decorate chocolate creations, while Choette Land at Poitiers is a fabulous indoor play centre with giant inflatable slides, go karting and more. Le Palmyre Zoo at Royan is renowned as one of the best in Europe and the Aquarium at La Rochelle gets visitors under the waves and up close to an eye popping array of the world’s marine life. The historic seaport city of La Rochelle as a whole is one of the must visit highlights of the region, from the quayside restaurants around the harbour to the ancient ramparts and buzzing walled town, crammed with pavement cafes and boutique shops. There are many sandy beaches near La Rochelle including one of the longest at the seaside resort of Chataillon Plage. From La Rochelle, families can also cross the big suspension bridge to check out the dune backed beaches, criss-crossing cycle tracks and chic harbour towns of the Ile de Re.
Nearest medical services: Saint Jean d’Angely, 10 mins.
Getting here: La Rochelle is the nearest airport to Le Beau Fief (45 miles/ 1 hour), with direct flights from the UK with Easyjet, Ryanair and FlyBe. Saint Malo is the nearest cross channel ferry port (3hrs 30 mins) and Caen is 4 hrs 30 mins.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
