Whatever the season, South Coombe Country Cottages, with an indoor pool and games room, make a fab choice for a family holiday or group gathering down in the Devon countryside. The traditional thatched ‘cob’ farmhouse dates back to the 1600’s and the owners have made one family suite for B&B as well as converting the outbuildings into 5 contemporary cottages for families of 3 to 10, plus babies.
South Coombe is set on the south side of a wooded valley, with 15 acres of outdoor space to fill up on fresh country air. Dogs are welcome in all but Orchard Cottage but owners should be aware of the free ranging chickens and Jemima Puddleducks waddling up from the duck ponds. A play area has a climbing frame, slide and swings or children can burn off energy playing ball games on the lawns, then flop down for a picnic in the old cider orchard. All the cottages also have their own garden or lawned area where little ones can safely play under the watchful eyes of parents as they relax and admire the views or sizzle up something for supper on the BBQ (not supplied but owners welcome to bring).
Sunny or not, the indoor pool is a highlight at South Coombe, with its vaulted, oak-beamed ceiling, loads of light pouring through big windows and French doors onto a sheltered, south-facing terrace. The 10x5m pool is a constant depth of 1.2 metres and kept comfortably warm, even for babies and toddlers to take the plunge with parents. For the under five’s there is a tumble room packed full of fun activities overlooking the pool and the most frazzled grown-ups can unwind in the heat of a Finnish sauna. Adjacent to the pool, a games room makes a great hangout for teenagers and fun family tournaments of table tennis, table football and pool.
From the beautiful conversion of the hayloft and stables, to a Scandinavian-style transformation of the original cart house, each of the five cottages has its own character but all share the same high standards of cosy, contemporary interiors. All of the cottages have open plan living spaces, designer kitchens and luxury bathrooms, as well as original features including timber beams, barn doors and log burners in Tilly’s, Drakes and Saffi’s Cottages. All of the cottages also have great views over South Coombe to the lush and leafy countryside beyond. A Devon Cream Tea on arrival makes a sweet start to any stay and the owners can also supply eggs from their free range hens, organic bread and fresh French pastries, warm and delicious from their AGA.

Location Information
South Coombe Country Cottages are surrounded by the quintessentially English countryside of rural Devon, between Exmoor and Dartmoor and 50 minutes from the North Devon coast. The pretty village of Witheridge is just one mile away, with a village store/post office, a newsagent and the traditional Mitre Inn, which is family and dog friendly and serves great home cooked food and local ales.
All the essential shops and amenities are available in Tiverton, (20 minutes’ drive), which is steeped in history and families can find out more at the award-winning museum and atmospheric Tiverton Castle. The town stands on the banks of the Grand Western Canal and ‘for people who love horses, boats, wildlife and water’, Tiverton Canal Company is a great ‘Living Heritage Attraction’, with horse drawn barge trips, rowing boats and Canadian canoes for hire, a buggy friendly tow-path nature reserve and fully licensed canal side café bar. Monster Mansion is a soft play centre in Tiverton and children from 4+ can have a ‘gripping’ time at the Wall in the Hall indoor climbing centre.
A further 20 minutes east of Tiverton, Diggerland is a must for Bob the Builder fans and has a host of rides and attractions for all ages – including the grown-ups! Also within an hour’s drive from South Coombe, on the outskirts of Exeter, Crealy Adventure Park is the South West’s number one family attraction, with over 60 theme park rides, cute and cuddly animals to meet and themed indoor play zones.
South Coombe is well placed to enjoy all of the attractions that Devon has to offer, with the closest being Quince Honey Farm, 20 minutes away in South Molton. It offers family fun and a soft play area for the young ones, along with a little education on the subject of bees!
Walkers and wildlife lovers can pull on the wellies to explore the wild scenery of Exmoor and Dartmoor, famous for its shaggy little ponies that children will love to meet at the Miniature Pony Centre. For days out by the sea, the North Devon Coast is around an hour away, including the scenic sandy surfer beaches, backed by dunes at Croyde and Saunton Sands, the dramatic craggy headland of Baggy Point and the award-winning seaside resort of Woolacombe.
Nearest medical services: Witheridge Medical Centre 5 mins; Tiverton Minor Injuries Unit, 20 mins.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
