The Glasshouse

Dartmouth, Devon, United Kingdom

Property Overview

4.7 (13 reviews )
The Glasshouse is a stunning, architect-designed, self-contained, annexe to an impressive Victorian villa nestling above Dartmouth and enjoying spectacular views of the River Dart from its impressive, almost entirely glazed front aspect.
Recently converted this 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom house, has been designed with young families firmly in mind thanks to the attention to detail of its owners the friendly Smither family with their own brood of little ones. As well as its own private gated entrance, beautiful secluded garden, two dedicated parking spaces and amazing views, it also boast a lovely selection of toys and long list of handy nursery gear, making it the perfect coastal bolt-hole for a family of four or two couples with a baby apiece.
Both the exterior and interior of the property have been lavished with attention. The good-sized, private and safely enclosed garden boasts a pretty circular lawn, a raised decked area – ideal for soaking in the views over evening drinks and suppers al fresco – and a comfortably furnished patio linked to the spacious open-plan inside living area via an impressive set of bi-folding doors that allow the whole width of the ground floor to be open to the garden and superb views beyond.
Inside, the house has been beautifully decorated with coastal shades and accents giving a relaxing and stylish feel. Comfortable contemporary furnishings are accented with design-led elements such as the Tulip dining table and chairs, ceiling hung bubble chair and SMEG fireplace, which nestle alongside the comfortable duck egg blue-coloured sofa, love seat, floor cushions and well-equipped white gloss kitchen with bar stools. There is of course a large TV with DVD player and also a high speed Wi-Fi connection but the feeling of light and space given by the floor to ceiling glazed doors (toughened safety glass of course), as well as the amazing views over the garden and valley towards the River Dart, make it seem almost churlish not to simply soak in the scenery as little ones scamper in and out of the house and garden with its ever tempting trampoline.
Gadget freaks will love the kitchen which has all the latest appliances along with an instant hot water tap, induction hob, Nespresso machine and wine fridge. The nearby cloakroom and utility room is very handy for housing the washing machine and tumble dryer and hiding all those things guests don’t really want to see.
Up the cleverly enclosed staircase with its safely glass side panels and treads, the two bedrooms have also been designed to make the most of the scenery, both boasting vaulted ceilings and fully glazed front aspects with patio doors opening into fabulous, safely-enclosed balconies. Both rooms also come with wall-mounted TVs and blackout blinds.
The master suite, or Castle View Room, as it is known, boasts a king-sized double bed and is decorated in neutral tones with light oak furniture. Throw open the patio doors onto a juliette balcony with only toughened glass between the room and the views of the River Dart. Look the other way, and there's a spacious walk-in wardrobe and a beautiful ensuite with a large walk in shower, wc and basin.
The second bedroom or 'Castle View Room' Harbour View Room has a nautically inspired room and is tastefully decorated in navy and white. It is conveniently flexible as it can be arranged as 2 single beds or one super king-sized double. Either way, guests will be blown away by the breathtaking views from its juliette balcony. This bedroom has use of the large family bathroom with its deep bath, walk-in shower and ambient lighting making it a wonderful spot for a pre-bed soak for young or old!

Location Information

The Glasshouse nestles on a hillside just 10 minutes walk from the very picturesque Georgian harbour town of Dartmouth. Known as one of the UK's most popular yachting havens, the town boasts a great selection of independent boutiques, bistros, cafes and convenient shops along its pretty cobbled streets. Boat trips depart regularly from its marina which is backed by a hotel with a luxurious little spa offering lovely treats for frazzled mums.
The award-winning, Blackpool Sands beach is within 10 minutes drive of the house and recently earned the accolade of being named Britain's Best Family Beach by Conde Nast Traveller and we'd tend to agree thanks to its handy car parking, cafe serving healthy kids meals and brilliant sand pit, which is ideal for little ones to sit and play in safety, as well as the wide sandy bay with shallow waters.
A little further afield there's Paignton Zoo, which has a great focus on conservation and animal welfare, as well as handy indoor soft play areas, should the weather not be ideal. There's also the fantastic Pennywell Farm Park with its animal feeding sessions, adorable miniature pigs and handy indoor play area. Steam train enthusiasts should head to Kingswear where a Thomas-a-like puffs up and down the coast thrilling little fans. Whilst the miniature pony centre at nearby Moretonhampstead is generally a big hit with mini riders too.
Foodies will not be disappointed, as well as the HQ of Riverfood Organics with its acclaimed kitchen cafe, there's the lovely Sharpham Wine and Cheese outlet with its vineyard and river tours with tastings, plus its own onsite cafe too. Dartmouth also boasts a wide selection of well respected restaurants from fine dining at The Angel or Seahorse, to gourmet fish and chips to eat in or take-away at Mitch Tonk's family-friendly Rockfish Seafood & Chips.
