This stunning boutique barn conversion (sleeps 9+cots) was completed by award-winning architects, Feildon Fowles in October 2012 and has earned high praise since thanks to its funky contemporary design with a family-friendly edge.
Picture-perfect both inside and out, not only could its interiors easily grace any of the upmarket glossies, but its exterior setting is idyllic too, being nestled between two nature reserves with abundant wildlife yet just a few miles from the coast at Bude and less than an hour from the Exeter turn off of the M5.
Owners Conrad and Karen Allen, live just across the courtyard, although not overlooking, so they and their two young sons are always on hand for tips and advice, or as playmates for younger guests. Their experience with their own brood has encouraged them to equip the barn with families in mind and it boasts a useful list of baby gear and toys (see grey box left). Best of all, they keep a large organic vegetable garden and chickens and often invite guests to help themselves to fresh produce and eggs to get the most from this country idyll, complete with private woodland.
The clever architecture incorporates two private terraces and its own a large grassy garden, perfect for football, al fresco breakfasts (from the estate's own free-range hens of course!) or evening sundowners. Plus, the fabulous bi-fold doors between the open-plan living area and the eastern terrace bring the outside in, and mean kids can roam freely while in safe sight of parents.
Inside, the design combines charming, rustic features such as the tongue and groove ceilings and romantic log burner, with colourful accent walls and funky printed wallpapers to create an inspiring environment in which to relax as a family. The slick design features include tonnes of concealed storage so there's plenty of space to keep all the family's kit safely stowed away, as well as offering lots of brilliant hiding places for impromptu games of hide and seek!
Although flooded with light, with an outstanding view from both upstairs and downstairs, bed-room blackout blinds, underfloor heating, the aforementioned log burner, cosy sofas, huge beds and luxury bed linens make it as cosy at night as it is light and bright by day, helped along by the kind of contemporary luxuries guests can expect from a highly rated BFB property such as REN toiletries, flat screen TVs and Bose sound systems.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
