In the heart of the Brittany countryside and only 30 minutes from the coast, La Lohuas Gîtes provide a relaxing, stress free setting to revel in the simple pleasures of France. There are five individual stone gites around a central farm courtyard where the British owners offer a slice of rural French life with plenty of family friendly features.
Each day at 10am, little ones can help feed the chickens and collect the eggs, which are available along with other local produce such as pâtés, local homemade jams, cider and organic Camembert. A complimentary welcome pack of breakfast basics is provided for the first morning and the owners can also supply homemade ready meals and a weekly menu featuring home cooked dishes using local produce which are delivered to your door.
The child-friendly gîtes are set in four acres of grounds which provide plenty of places and space for children to run free. The safely enclosed grassy play area is fab, with 14ft trampoline, slide, swings and more plus if the weather isn’t great there’s a big play barn full of ride ons, lots of toys, a sandpit and table tennis. A leafy ‘grotto garden’ and orchard are pretty places to play hide and seek or find a secluded spot with a book and the new UV treated glass covered pool, heated to 28°c, is luxury whatever the weather, with a retractable roof for hot sunny days.
The gîtes are built in traditional Breton style, with stone walls and slate roofs, then extensively modernised, comfortably furnished and well equipped – from flat screen Freesat TV’s, DVD players and stereos with USB sockets to newly fitted kitchens and helpful baby-friendly holiday essentials. Each one also has its own south facing patio with garden furniture and bbq. There are children’s books in all the gîtes and the owners offer tailored toy boxes to amuse babies, toddlers and older children. The gîtes share a communal laundry area with free use of washing machines, washing lines and pegs so it’s perfectly possible to leave space in the suitcase for fine French wines, ciders and other indulgences!
Accommodation Overview – La Garnde Maison
Le Lohuas Gîtes comprise two 2-bedroom gîtes for four people, two 3-bedroom gîtes for 6 people and one 3-bedroom gite for 7 people and 1 large gite for 12 people.
La Grand Maison is a 5-bedroom gîte for a group of 12, with space for a babies in a travel cots, which can be provided. On the ground floor the gîte has a large cosy lounge with log burning fire, modern kitchen with dishwasher, oven, microwave and fridge freezer.
There are two dining tables which can seat up to 14, upstairs there is a play room with a pool table and table football, a television with English and French stations and a sofa which can transform into sofa bed.
Also on this floor are two double bedrooms and a large bathroom with separate shower and bath and a separate toilet.
The stairs lead up to the second floor where there is a master bedroom with kingsize bed and ensuite shower room, a bunk bedded room with L-shaped bunks and a large family bedroom with one double bed and two singles. A separate bathroom with bath and shower cubicle is also on this floor.
Location Information
La Lohuas Gîtes are located in the Cote D’Armor corner of Brittany, where traditional farming countryside meets a magnificent coastline of beaches, coves and pink granite cliffs. The gites are surrounded by rolling fields and woodlands near the villages of Les Champs Geraux and Evran (2 miles), with the beautiful medieval town of Dinan only 7 miles away.
The historic little port of Dinan on the River Rance is packed with ancient timber framed buildings and cutesy cobbled streets are lined with tempting little restaurants and interesting shops. Besides sampling savoury Breton galettes and sweet crepes, the Cote D’Armor is renowned for its shellfish and especially scallops, so this is the place to try Coquilles St Jacques, washed down with excellent local ciders.
For days on the beach, there are countless sandy shores and deserted coves to choose from within half an hour’s drive. Dinard is a beautiful seaside resort which attracted the well heeled English and Americans of the Belle Époque at the beginning of the 1900’s and boasts lovely sandy beaches backed by a long, push-chair friendly promenade of palm trees and flowers. Other quieter, unspoilt beaches can be found around the pretty town of Pleneuf Val Andre and at Cancale, St Malo, Erquy, St Cast le Guido and Les Sables d'Or (literally the Golden Sands).
There is so much to see and do within easy reach of the gîtes that the Haycox provide a folder full of ideas in each gite and are always happy to offer personal suggestions. Visiting the colourful markets is a must, to stock up on superb local produce but also pick up bargain antiques or find intriguing brac a brac. The most iconic Brittany attraction is Mont St Michel and Disneyland Paris is 2 hours on the TGV from Rennes. Other family things to do and places to visit include the Cobac waterpark, La Bourbansais chateau zoo and the Aquarium in St Malo.
Getting There: The nearest cross channel ferry port is St Malo (25 minutes drive), with crossings from Portsmouth by Brittany Ferries and fast craft services by Condor Ferries from Poole during the summer months. The other main ferry ports are Cherbourg (2hrs 30 mins), Le Havre (2hrs 40 minutes) and Calais (5hrs). Dinard (25mins) has the nearest airport with low cost Ryanair flights available from Stansted.
