Wow wow wow. When it comes to luxury ski chalets, La Grange Au Merle is a masterpiece in making families feel spoilt rotten, thanks to the fabulous surroundings and boutique hotel services throughout the winter season. Just minutes from the Alpine resort of Chatel and the Portes du Soleil Ski area, this newly renovated 5-bedroom chalet will bring on gasps of glee, with its lavish log cabin character, roaring fire, breath-taking views, balcony hot tub and toasty sauna. From the minute families arrive, ‘The 3 C’’s’ will make sure everything is going to be effortless and exceptional – the Concierge, Chef and Chauffeur – plus the 4th C is the choice of childcare available, from a private nanny or babysitter to kids clubs and ski schools.
To make the most of the awesome mountain views, the magnificent first floor is the heart of the Chalet, with its double height, open plan living space, huge picture windows and French doors onto a south facing, wrap-around balcony. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, what could be better than having steaming hot chocolate, vin chaud and home-baked goodies by a roaring fire and sipping pre dinner drinks with canapes at the chalet’s cocktail bar? While guests enjoy some apres ski, the chef will be preparing a 4-course feast in the state-of-the-art kitchen, served with specially selected wines but younger children can also eat earlier at a special chef’s table. After dinner, children can settle down for onesie evenings in the cosy TV snug, watching DVD’s or playing with the toys, games, arts and crafts provided and when the little ones are tucked up in bed, parents can soothe away any aches and pains in the hot tub under the stars.
A hearty breakfast fuels up families for days of Alpine fun which may well start with snowman building and snowball fights in the chalet’s enclosed garden, especially for pre-schoolers staying with the nannies at the Snow Babes crèche. It could be tricky to tear away Disney’s Frozen fanatics from their very own Alpine playhouse, 'Crystal de Niege' but the nannies will also take youngsters on little outings in Chatel to go sledging, ice skating and have hot chocolates in the local cafes. For older children, Little Yetis and Mountain Lions kids clubs combine the chalet’s nanny service with professional ski lessons and plenty of fun activities. Grown-ups will be whisked off to the slopes by the chalet’s chauffeur, without wasting any time on the ski buses which is just as well when there’s a staggering 650kms of pistes to explore in the Portes du Soleil ski region! For beginners just coping with the nursery slopes and experienced pro’s, zipping down the black runs, everyone loves the apres ski and Chatel has plenty of lively bars, cafes and restaurants for swapping stories of the day’s thrills and spills.

Location Information
La Grange au Merle enjoys a panoramic and peaceful setting, overlooking the ski resort village of Châtel in the Chablais Massif part of the French Alps, right next to the Swiss border. The centre of the village is a ‘toddler-able’ 10-minute stroll, with traditional chocolate-box Alpine architecture framed by the awesome mountain backdrop. The village has all the essential shops, amenities and, most importantly, a good choice of cosy cafes, cool bars and child-friendly restaurants for lush chocolate chaud, apres ski drinks and Savoyard specialities.
From the village, 5 main ski lifts whisk winter sports devotees into the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski region, which boasts an enviable snowfall season and a formidable 650km of groomed pistes, connected by a network of 200 lifts. Professional ski schools will help beginners get to grips with the nursery slopes while more experienced skiers are spoilt for choice with runs for all abilities, right up to thrill seeker experiences including night skiing, extreme skiing, para skiing and The Fantasticable zip wire.
Besides traditional skiing and snowboarding, families can have loads more fun trying other winter sports activities like dog sleigh rides and sledging (three runs to choose from), Nordic ski and snow-shoe trails, the exhilarating Snake Gliss ride, Airboarding on inflatables and Yahooning (like a bike on skis!). For a break from the elements, Chatel also has a bowling alley, two cinemas and the Form d’Or Aquatic Centre, with a 25m pool, children pool, play area and spa centre.
When the snow melts away, Chatel is transformed into a stunning summer destination, surrounded by the Alpine wild flower meadows of the Vallée d’Abondance. Naturally it’s a breath-taking spot for hiking and increasingly popular for mountain biking as the ski lifts are adapted to carry bikes to a growing number of trails.
Nearest medical services: GP in Chatel. A&E 30-minute drive
Getting here: Geneva is the nearest airport to Le Grange du Merle, 90 minutes away by car.

Colette SintonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were lucky enough to have Vicki's expertise and support in finding our family holiday in Zakynthos this summer. After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! MAGGIE OAKLANDTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used baby friendly bolt holes to book a trip to Portugal. Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. Hannah RoseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Since our daughter was born 2.5 years ago, we have booked every single trip away with BFB. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
