While glamping has brought the adventures of the great outdoors to the most adamant anti-campers, Black Pig Retreats takes family holidays under canvas to a whole new level of luxury!
Set in the rolling Dorset countryside, Bittles Brook Farm was formerly a riding school, until owner Carolyn and family decided to diversify and create an exclusive glamping setting, with three amazing safari tents. There are still a few horses roaming around the 36-acre farm, as well as sheep and chickens, but it’s the magnificent black pigs, Beauty and Belle, who ‘hog’ the limelight.
The three safari tents, which were made in Taunton, are as big as bungalows and have the comfy, stylish interiors of a rustic-chic holiday home, with the added fun factor of sleeping under canvas. The tents are built on timber decks, with private verandas to enjoy the views, eat outdoors and kick back watching the kids playing ‘Little House on the Prairie’ in the surrounding meadow, with a babbling brook (and if you don’t remember those carefree pig-tailed children from the classic 70’s series, just YouTube the iconic intro!). Each tent also has its own fire-pit, made by a local blacksmith, for toasting marshmallows and bedtime stories by the campfire, under the stars.
In keeping with the piggy theme, the three tents have been quirkily named after fine breeds from France, Spain and Africa – Gascon, Murciano and Mukota – and each has the finishing touches to match, from the pretty linen and brass bedsteads in Gascon to the more rustic ’Out of Africa’ style of Mukota. All three tents have open plan living/dining rooms, with wooden floors, big sofas and wood burning stoves, as well as bespoke fitted kitchens, made by a local craftsman, with running water, a small fridge freezer, gas hob and wood fired oven. The separate bedrooms have proper king size and twin single beds, with soft duvets and fluffy pillows, and there’s no need to dread the midnight trudge across a field to the loo, because the tents have their own shower room and WC.
For special occasions and group gatherings of up to 16 people plus babies, all three tents can be booked together to have the run of the place, which includes use of a Straw Bothy and Chuck Wagon for communal dining – a really unique and exclusive family festy!
Accommodation overview
Black Pig Retreats comprises two 3-bedroom safari tents (Gascon and Murciano) and one 2-bedroom safari tent (Mukota) which all have an open plan living/dining room, fitted kitchen, shower room and WC, electric lights and USB ports. Children’s crockery, toys and games are all included and travel cots and high chairs will be supplied as required. The tents stand on individual timber decks with private verandas and their own fire-pit, surrounded by a flower filled meadow with a babbling brook, edged by woodlands. When all three tents are booked together, the group also has use of a Straw Bothy and Chuck Wagon for communal dining.
Gascon (3-bedroom, sleeps 6+baby) has a panoramic position on Brittles Brook Farm, situated half way up the meadow to make the most of the beautiful views over the Dorset countryside. The large veranda is perfect for eating outdoors, enjoying the views and watching the kids playing in the meadow, as well as stargazing with a night cap. The spacious, light and airy living/dining room has wood floors with rugs, comfy sofas by a wood burning stove and a dining table that seats 6. In the corner, a bespoke kitchen has a sink with hot running water, a gas hob, wood fired oven and small fridge freezer as well as all the essential pots, pans and crockery. To the side of the kitchen, little ones will love clambering into a funky double cabin bed, (that makes a brilliant den!), and curtains lead through to the two other bedrooms – one with a king-size brass bedstead and the other with twin single beds. Both have space for the travel cot which can be provided. Through the bedrooms, a shower room and WC means no trudging across a field and besides being ensuite, there is a separate access at the rear of the tent.

Location Information
Although not far from the A303, Bittles Brook Farm is surrounded by the rolling Dorset countryside of Blackmore Vale, on the outskirts of Motcombe village and less than 2 miles from Shaftesbury. The welcome pack in the safari tents are largely made up with local produce from Motcombe Community shop, which is handy for basic essentials but for a big, supermarket shop, there is a Tesco in Shaftesbury and both Waitrose and Asda in Gillingham, that will all deliver to the farm. Besides the community shop, Motcombe has a post office and the Coppleridge Country Inn, with a friendly bar and various dining areas, inside and out, including a children’s garden.
A bus runs from Motcombe to the idyllic market town of Shaftesbury, with its steep cobbled Gold Hill, made famous in the iconic ‘70’s Hovis adverts. With its commanding views over Blackmore Vale, Shaftesbury has been a thriving market town since King Alfred’s time and is largely unchanged since the 18th century, making it a twee treasure trove of cafes, pubs, restaurants and independent shops. In the neighbouring town of Gillingham, the award-winning Udder Farm Shop is also well worth a visit, not only for its fabulous range of Dorset goodies, from the deli to the butchery to the fishmonger, but also for its coffee shop with a large children’s play area.
Dorset is full of fun family things to see and do, whatever the weather, with a wide variety less than half an hour’s drive from Black Pig Retreats, including Farmer Palmers Farm Park, Bush Farm Bison Centre, Honeybrook activity farm and Stourhead. The bigger attractions of Longleat, Monkey World, Corfe Castle, Swanage Steam Railway and Stonehenge are also within an hour’s drive, as well as the fossil strewn Jurassic Coast and soft sand, blue-flag beaches like Studland and Sandbanks which boasts that it’s the best beach in the UK.
Nearest medical services: Minor injuries unit 2 miles away.

Colette SintonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were lucky enough to have Vicki's expertise and support in finding our family holiday in Zakynthos this summer. After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! MAGGIE OAKLANDTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used baby friendly bolt holes to book a trip to Portugal. Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. Hannah RoseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Since our daughter was born 2.5 years ago, we have booked every single trip away with BFB. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
