Owners of Bagnizeau Gites, Nikki and Richard, are experts in making guests feel welcome and at home, having spent most of their working lives managing quality hotels in England. Besides making this former Cognac estate their family home, they have created four boutique-style gites and a thoroughly relaxing setting, in the warm and sun-blessed Charente Maritime.
The gites are set in a 2-acre country estate, which is walled and gated to create a safe, private park for even small children to free range and play hide and seek amongst the trees and shrubs. Whilst exploring the grounds, children will also be delighted to discover more fun and games including swing, slide, badminton net and boules pitch. In the heat of the day, a huge, open fronted games barn known as ‘the hangar’ is the cool place to head for a tournament of table football or table tennis or perhaps just a circuit or two in a Little Tikes car.
The heated salt water swimming pool is fenced and gated, with sunbeds, parasols and tables on a large patio at the side for grown ups to relax in a sheltered hotspot or take an afternoon nap with baby in the ‘the old shade’ of the trees. Sunbathing interruptions with babies and toddlers are inevitable but a poolside changing room, shower and toilet make things a little less hassle. During July and August, the owners offer Scuba Diving lessons in the pool with a qualified PADI instructor, and children from 8 years upwards can have a go with the ‘bubble maker’ kit to get them used to underwater swimming.
The owners have chosen a contemporary style for the gites and kept typical Charentaise features for added character, such as exposed beams, stone walls and the bright blue shutters, which look great and help pooped parents get a good night’s sleep. With all their hospitality expertise, their emphasis has been to provide every mod con and home comfort, from well equipped kitchens and essential home entertainment to powerful showers, comfy beds and a helpful range of baby gear. A welcome pack of locally sourced provisions is provided.
Accommodation overview
La Vigne, (sleeps 6/7) is a spacious old farmhouse which opens onto a patio area with garden table, chairs and a stone BBQ. The large lounge, with a tiled floor, is very spacious, with comfortable seating for everyone, a flat screen TV with English channels, a DVD player and the original fireplace which has a wood burning stove. The lounge leads through to the dining area which is separated from the kitchen by a chef-style counter so grown-ups can keep an eye on kids at the table while preparing their meals and snacks. The fitted kitchen has a full sized cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, kettle, coffee machine, toaster and plastic children’s crockery and cutlery. All three bedrooms are on the first floor. The large master bedroom has plenty of Charentaise character, tucked under the timber eaves and rustic beams, with a wrought iron super king size bed and a single bed, making it ideal for parents with a toddler. The two other bedrooms both have twin single beds and the family bathroom has a bath, separate shower, WC and washbasin. A cot, high chair, and stairgates can all be provided.

Location Information
Bagnizeau Gites is situated in the Charente region of Western France, which is renowned for long hot summers, beautiful beaches and the scenic Cote Sauvage pine forests and cliffs. The gites are approximately 45 minutes from the coast in the heart of ‘Cognac country’ and the owners will happily recommend the best local suppliers, in addition to the tours and tastings at famous Cognac estates, such as Hennessey and Remy Martin.
The gites are just a short stroll from the ancient riverside village of Bagnizeau and 2 miles (4 mins drive) from the small market town of Matha which provides most essential amenities including boulangeries and other local shops, supermarkets, restaurants and banks. Approximately 15 minutes drive away, the pretty town of St Jean d’Angely makes a lovely spot for a picnic in the riverside gardens, with play areas and paddle boats, plus children will have a splashing time at the Atlantys Aquatic Centre, featuring a 54 metre water slide, river, whirlpool and massage jets.
The Charente’s leading seaside resort of Royan is just over an hour’s drive from Les Vieilles Ombres, which boasts some of the finest beaches in France stretching to the north and south of the town. Having long been a favourite with chic Parisians, Royan has many designer shops and upmarket stores plus the modernist market hall is a THE place to stock up on fabulous local produce and a mass of fresh caught fish and seafood, including the famous Marenne oysters. Whilst visiting Royan, a major family attraction is the huge La Palmyre zoo, considered to be one of the best in Europe, with more than 1,600 animals from 5 continents including polar bear, snow leopards, Siberian tigers, elephants, monkeys and apes.
On another day trip to the coast, families can visit the Ile d’Oleron and Ile de Re which are accessible by road bridges and perfect for exploring on bikes, being very flat and criss-crossed with dedicated cycle trails. The Ile de Re is especially renowned for its beautiful beaches and chic little harbour towns like St. Martin de Re.
The historic old port of a La Rochelle (65 mins), is well worth a visit, with a bustling old town of interesting shops, lively restaurants and cafes, all crammed within the medieval city walls, as well as an amazing aquarium.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
