The very thought of a long haul flight to the sun with babies and toddlers makes the Canary Islands an enticing year round destination and parents can completely relax in the peaceful setting of Villa Guatiza.
The 200-year old Finca blends in with the other traditional, whitewashed buildings of Guatiza village but the owners have lavished a whole lot of love and flair on transforming the farmhouse into an oasis of comfort and tranquillity. They’ve gone for Canarian simplicity with a Moroccan twist and furnished the villa to the highest standards, providing essential gear for parents with youngsters.
The villa is all on one level and high beamed ceilings of up to 8 metres make the rooms feel especially spacious and airy, but if it does get chilly, families can be nice and cosy too, snuggling into big Italian sofas and armchairs in the lounge, by a wood burning stove. The fully fitted farmhouse kitchen, with a striking emerald green stone floor, has been well equipped for family self catering, from a 3-compartment range oven with a 6-burner hob and a large fridge freezer to all kinds of handy kitchen gadgets and a Nespresso machine. The owners also provide a generous welcome hamper, including wine, beer, milk, water, bread, cheese and fresh fruit. One end of the kitchen is a dining area, with a handmade cedar table big enough for 8, or dinners can be a little more romantic, by the light of an ornate Moroccan candle lamp suspended overhead.
Leading off the lounge and the dining kitchen are the villas’ two double bedrooms, which both have luxury ensuite shower rooms featuring beautiful mosaic tiling and an exposed wall of volcanic rock.
Both the bedrooms also open onto a 110m2 veranda, which steps down to the garden and overlook the volcanic landscape beyond. There are loungers on the veranda for a sneaky snooze in the sun and a dining pergola, so parents can stoke up the gas BBQ for dinner then have nightcaps under the stars, while little ones sleep close by.
Villa Guatiza stands in 7500m2 of private garden and grounds, full of swishy palm trees, flowery shrubs and exotic cacti. A heated swimming pool is totally secluded and sheltered from the island’s breeze by whitewashed walls, so parents can soak up the sun on teak loungers and set out snacks and drinks for children in a poolside pergola. If parents feel guilty about all the lazing around by the pool, the villa has a gym to pump some weights and a sauna to soothe away aches of pains.

Location Information
Just 30 minutes north of Lanzarote’s Arrecife airport, Villa Guatiza is found on the outskirts of Guatiza village which boasts the beautiful Jardin de Cactus, designed by the island’s most famous artist and architect, Cesar Manrique. The village is only a few minutes’ walk from the Villa, where there is an Italian restaurant and a small supermarket which has a good meat counter for BBQ’s as well as fresh vegetables, fruit and most other essentials. The Jardin de Cactus itself is one of the highlights of Lanzarote’s Manrique trail, with over 1000 different species and cacti themed sculptures in a stunning setting.
Manrique had a major influence on ensuring that Lanzarote remains distinctly Canarian and unspoilt, despite the growth of tourism and this is definitely apparent in the northern half of the island. Arrieta (10 mins) is one of the most traditional fishing villages on the island, where the catch of the day is still hauled onto the shore every morning, guaranteeing the freshest fish and seafood in the seafront restaurants. Arrieta is also a lovely spot for a day on the beach at Playa de la Garita, boasting an 810m bay of soft sand and calm sea, a beach bar and restaurant, WC, showers and a play park. Arrieta also has a supermarket for beach picnic supplies and a very good pizzeria.
Just a little further along the coast from Arrieta, the volcanic caves and pools of Jameos del Agua is another of Lanzarote’s top attractions and possibly Manrique’s best example of using the lava landscape to create an architectural masterpiece. At the northern tip of Lanzarote, families will find another lovely beach near Orzola, that has little stone bunkers to set up camp out of the breeze and an inlet which is shallow for paddling and peering into rockpools. From Orzola families can also hop on a ferry to visit the tiny island of Graciosa and take the road out of town to the panoramic Mirador del Rio for its stunning views from this incredible restaurant.
Twenty minutes’ inland from Villa Guatiza, is the beautifully unspoilt Canarian town of Haria in ‘The Valley of a Thousand Palms’, which have been planted for generations to mark the birth of a child. The town is popular with artists and there are interesting shops and galleries to browse, as well as an arts and crafts market on Saturday, plus a must for Manrique fans is to see his work at the ‘Fundacion’.
No visit to Lanzarote is complete without taking the tour of the ‘fire mountain’ volcanoes in Timanfaya National Park and watch brush-wood burst into flames from the searing heat just below the surface at the panoramic restaurant. Close to the entrance to Timanfaya, children might also enjoy a wobbly camel trek up one of the volcanic slopes.
For a more happening holiday town, the attractive resort of Costa Teguise is only 15 minutes drive from Villa Guatiza, with golden sandy bays set out with sun loungers and a long crescent promenade of restaurants, cafes and English enclaves. There are endless restaurants to suit every taste as well as a good shopping, supermarkets, amusement, arcades, an aquarium and waterpark. Lanzarote’s biggest holiday resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are also within 45 minutes’ drive.
Nearest medical services: Walk-in, 24-hour medical centres in Costa Teguise (15 mins).

Colette SintonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were lucky enough to have Vicki's expertise and support in finding our family holiday in Zakynthos this summer. After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
