Although the clue is in the name, few would guess that this sleek new, contemporary holiday cottage was once a lowly cow shed and creamery.
Owners Kate and Kevin Thomas moved to the 9-acre small holding in 2010 with their three young boys hoping to swap the rat race for the Cornish good life, complete with free range chickens and bristly Berkshire pigs. The transformation of The Old Dairy was completed in 2012 and, as parents themselves, the couple have kitted out the cottage with toys and equipment to make it particularly family and baby friendly.
While being careful to preserve the character of the place, the Thomas’ have gone for a modern architectural conversion, where light floods in through floor to ceiling windows and underfloor heating makes the oak and slate floors warm and toasty for little toes. The living/dining/kitchen is open plan and on the first floor, opening onto an enclosed south facing balcony with bistro table and chairs. The cottage has also been kitted out to the highest spec, including granite worktops and Bosch appliances in the well equipped kitchen, leather sofas, contemporary wood burner and the latest home entertainment including flat screen HD TV’s, iPod docks and Wi Fi. The master bedroom is ensuite and there is a separate bathroom too, both with fluffy Egyptian cotton towels and Bayliss & Harding toiletries.
The long list of baby essentials provided makes light work of the packing, as does the fact that a selection of toys, books, games and family DVD’s are available. The cottage also has a meadow for children to burn off energy with all the outdoor games, footballs, Little Tikes slide and car, or play in the sand pit or summer house. Children can help the owners feed the animals and collect fresh eggs for breakfast and buckets, spades, crab lines and nets are provided for busy days on the beach. Besides the eggs, parents can buy sausages from the owners and a Cornish Cream Tea is a tasty treat in the welcome pack.
Accommodation Overview:
The Old Dairy sleeps up to 4, plus a baby in cot. The master bedroom has ensuite shower room, a kingsize bed, HD TV, iPod dock and space for a cot. The other bedroom boasts a zip’n’link bed that can be set up as a king-sized double or twin 2ft 6 beds. The bathroom is luxurious with sink, WC, shower and large double-ended bath.
Upstairs, the open plan living space houses a kitchen area complete with granite worktops, Bosh appliances and washer dryer. The dining area seats four plus a highchair (provided) and the lounge boasts a HD TV with DVD player, a small hi-fi with iPod dock, and two leather sofas for snuggling up on in front of the romantic log burner.
Outside, there is plenty of space to park, a safely enclosed balcony off the lounge and a meadow for playing and running about in.
Location Information
The Old Dairy is located in the quiet, rural setting of Godolphin Cross in South West Cornwall, between the fishing village of Porthleven and the market town of Helston.
The grounds of the owners 9-acre small holding border the National Trust’s Godolphin Estate, as featured in Caroline Quenton’s ‘Cornwall’, where families can enjoy lovely woodland walks from the cottage front door and in Spring, bluebells blanket the woods in a heady mass of blue. The cottage also nestles at the base of Godolphin Hill and families who climb the 162 metres to the summit can look across the landscape of Cornwall’s mining heritage, right over to the north coast or south to the Lizard Peninsula.
There are two farm shops within a couple of miles of Godolphin Cross and a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes in Porthleven (4 miles). There’s a supermarket which stocks local produce as well as all the essentials, plus Porthleven boasts a fishmongers, an award-winning Cornish pasty bakery and quayside shop selling the juiciest, fresh caught crab, all ready to eat.
A long stretch of sandy beach runs from Porthleven towards the Lizard and the fantastic Praa Sands is also close by. The North coast is also just a short drive away, to discover more fabulous beaches like Carbis Bay and Gwithian Sands but also to visit the bustling, arty town of St Ives, home to Cornwall’s Tate gallery.
If it isn’t quite the weather for a day on the beach, Cornwall’s Eden Project is a must and the owners 3 boys recommend a visit to The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth and Porthcurno Telegraph Museum. Other local family attractions include Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Flambards theme park and Paradise Park.
St Michael’s Mount makes a unique day out, crossing the causeway from Marazion at low tide and while the most southerly tip of England is within striking distance, Lands End is definitely one to tick off the list. Mousehole is a typically cute Cornish fishing village and home of Stargazey Pie from the fisherman’s tale, while children will love a trip to Roskilly’s on the Lizard, to sample the famous ice cream, scrummy sundaes and clotted cream fudge, or make their own milkshakes and see the cows being milked.
Nearest Medical Services: There are both doctor surgeries and a hospital (with minor injuries department) in Helston (10 minutes away).

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
