At this fab farm conversion, in one of the sunniest parts of France, frazzled parents can enjoy a well earned rest while tots to teens happily play the days away. Swathes of sunflowers, corn on the cob and vines surround the cottages in a peaceful rural setting and the beaches and islands of West Coast France are half an hour away.
Owners, Paula and Rob have invested all their experience as parents in the transformation of this rambling Charantais farmhouse into three well equipped cottages for families, complete with a lovely big garden, heated pool and games room that are really geared up for children to play. The couple are also working on a fourth cottage which is due to open in Spring 2015. La Bigorre is surrounded by fields of sunflowers, corn and vines
In the enclosed garden, toddlers won’t know what to do first, from discovering the dedicated under 5’s swingset and slide playhouse, to the ride ons, trikes, rockers, play tables and toys. Older children have their own adventure swingset and there’s a treehouse, trampoline and huge grass games field with football nets and the necessaries for croquet, cricket, badminton and boules. In an open games barn, let the tournaments commence of table football, table tennis, air hockey and pool, while a small craft shed is kitted out with paints and materials to get creative.
While all this is going on, grown-ups can lounge by the 10x5m heated swimming pool (safely fenced and gated) although the kids will soon shatter the peace by splashing around with the inflatables and diving down for sinkers. Apaddling pool is also provided so babies and toddlers can have a paddle and a play too.
To calm things down indoors, the owners have built up a huge selection of DVDs, from Bob the Builder to Harry Potter, plus there’s a good choice for grown-ups to watch when the kiddiwinks are in bed. Playmobil, Little People and Barbie are also among the toys provided as well as family board games and books for bedtime stories.
All four holiday homes are spacious and very ‘French country cottage’ in style, combining rustic features and traditional furnishings with all mod cons, including fully fitted kitchens, iPod docks and free Wi Fi is available in the open games barn. A long list of baby equipment is also provided to make everything that bit easier, including Bumbo seats, bouncy seats, high chairs, cots, bed guards, baby monitors and sterilizers. All the cottages have their own terrace with outdoor seating, parasol and BBQ so families can spill outside for breakfasts al fresco and sunset sizzles. The owners usually host a barbecue for families during their stay and they will also supply breakfast, dinner and drinks packs by prior arrangement.

Location Information
La Bigorre is nestled in the countryside of the Charente Maritime region of Western France, half an hour from the amazing beaches, historic ports and not far from the islands of the Atlantic Coast. The name is actually the tiny hamlet itself, comprising just a handful of houses, so the trick to identifying the cottages is simply to look out for the well at the side of Well Cottage!
10 minutes from La Bigorre, the pretty little market town of Gemozac provides a variety of local shops, restaurants and cafes, while the little port of Mortagne, on the Gironde estuary, has pavement cafes around a picturesque marina. Just a little further, the Gironde meets the Atlantic at the seaside resort of Royan, which has been attracting sun worshippers since Victorian times, thanks to some of the finest beaches in France stretching to the north and south of the town. Being a popular spot with chic Parisians, Royan has many designer shops and upmarket stores plus the modernist market hall is a THE place to stock up on fabulous local produce and a mass of fresh caught fish and seafood.
South of Royan and half an hour from La Bigorre, families are spoilt for choice with more beautiful beaches, such as those in St Georges de Didonne and Meschers, as well as those further north on the Ile d'Oleron, accessed by a road bridge. The best way to explore the Ile d’Oleron is on a bike, with well marked cycle trails criss-crossing the helpfully flat island and a full range of bikes of all sizes is provided at La Bigorre, including child seats, chariots and ‘Trail Gators’. And when on the Ile d’Oleron, sampling the super fat Marenne oysters is a must!
One hour from La Bigorre, the historic port of La Rochelle is well worth a visit, with a bustling old town of interesting shops, lively restaurants and cafes, all crammed within the medieval city walls. The city also boasts an amazing aquarium and a road bridge crosses from La Rochelle to the Ile de Re, renowned for its chic harbour towns and more lovely sandy beaches.
Besides lazing on the beaches and discovering the major attractions of the Atlantic Coast, families can explore salt marsh wetlands of the Charente Maritime region by taking The Little Train, just 30 minutes from La Bigorre. Another great day out would be to the huge zoo at La Palmyre (40 mins), considered to be one of the best in Europe, with more than 1,600 animals from 5 continents including polar bear, snow leopards, Siberian tigers, elephants, monkeys and apes.
Nearest medical services: GP at Gemozac (10 mins), hospital at Saintes (25 mins).
Getting here: La Rochelle and Bordeaux airports are approximately 1 hour from La Bigorre, with many low cost flights from the UK.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. Hannah RoseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Since our daughter was born 2.5 years ago, we have booked every single trip away with BFB. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. Thanks! Joel DaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really fast and easy, available on a Sunday to complete our booking. Highly recommended Samantha ClarkeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
