Location Information
Charente Retreat is peacefully located in a small hamlet just a few minutes drive (30mins walk) from the bustling town of Mauze-sur-Mignon and and about 15mins from the larger town of Surgeres. The latter is a picturesque market town with a wide choice of restaurants, supermarkets, shops and banks. It has a beautifully restored and preserved old walled town, a cinema, sports centre, tennis courts, an open air swimming pool and a colourful covered market (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) offering a plentiful supply of local produce including the butter for which Surgeres is famous.
La Rochelle with its beautiful old town and charming port, crammed with seafood bistros, is less than half hour away. For a very special meak, try the 2 Michelin Star restaurant 'Coutanceau', regarded as one of the best restaurants on the Atlantic Coast. Alternatively, potter around the old port and the town centre with its many delicatessens and classy boutiques under the covered arcades of Renaissance houses. During the summer months there is street theatre every day and a craft market alongside the port most evenings, when the roads are closed to traffic to make space for performers, craftspeople and artists. La Rochelle houses Europe's largest marina on the Atlantic Coast and a fabulous aquarium. Its beautiful parks are worth a visit and the famous yellow cycles can be hired free of charge for the first two hours all year round. Boat trips are available from the Old Harbour, lasting a few hours, half a day or a full day to the islands of Re, Aix and Oleron, which themselves are highly recommended for day trips.
Don't miss a day trip to the charming town of Cognac with its pretty cobbled streets, brilliant modern art gallery and, of course, Cognac houses which are often open for tours and tastings. Children are usually permitted but a toddler-friendly sightseeing land train departs regularly from just outside the entrance of the Henessey factory, so parents can take shifts in touring and entertaining the little ones.
Beaches: Along with the beaches of La Rochelle and Fouras, this is the nearest beach to Charente Retreat , is Chatelaillon Plage (approx 30mins by car). This is a bustling seaside resort with a casino, promenade and thalassotherapy centre. It has a vast beach of fine sand that is regarded as one of the safest on the coast. The town spends a great deal of its revenue ensuring the 3 km of fine sand is kept in good condition throughout the year. The resort boasts a water complex with giant flume, kids clubs and sailing school and clubs. This is an ideal destination for families with young children. The beachside park with its crazy golf and outdoor theatre is a wonderful place for holiday makers to relax and enjoy themselves. There are many informal restaurants along the front offering excellent seafood. Its covered market is open every day with a large street market every Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Getting There: The nearest airports are La Rochelle (35mins drive), Poiters (60mins) & Angouleme (120mins)
Train: TGV From Paris (Montparnasse) to Surgeres takes approx. 2.5hrs.

After finding out exactly what we hoped for and needed, Vicki was able to find our perfect holiday - we were so looking forward to it and couldn't have been more delighted. Vicki's communication was informative and proactive throughout - our happiness with the arrangements was of the utmost importance to her and I felt I could get in touch with any queries. These were addressed swiftly and efficiently. I really felt like she went the extra mile in helping us plan our holiday and ensuring we were comfortable with all aspects. Highly recommend!! Tori was really helpful in helping us book, manage transfers, etc. On our departure day we had unexpected passport issues - Tori was straight on to the hotel and arranged for us to stay a couple of days later than planned. She was brilliant and really diffused the stress of a heart sink situation. Would definitely book with these guys again. We have never been disappointed, and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to holidays! They respond so quickly to every query and have got us some great deals. I trust them fully with what are such crucial decisions about our much needed holidays and recommend them to every parent I know! I would be lost without them! The matching service was really useful Chris ReddingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I submitted some basic details on their form on a Sunday evening and Tori got back to me the next day. We exchanged several emails and spoke on the phone. Tori was well informed, responsive and thorough. I was able to book a place that looks great with her help. It was great to have help from someone who specialises in family holidays, as our requirements are pretty different now compared to before having kids. I don't actually think I've ever had a personal service to help book a holiday before. Maybe this is what it was like when people used to go to the travel agent on the high street... Thanks Tori and BFB, would recommend and use again. Jessica TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Baby Friendly Boltholes by doing a Google search, and completed their online form with my holiday requirements. They got back to me very quickly with some great recommendations which were also very cost effective. Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances we're unable to book at this time, but I will definitely go back to Baby Friendly Boltholes when we're in a position to move forward with our booking. I can’t recommend Juliet at babyboltholes enough, from our initial enquiry right through to booking, she was responsive, understanding and patient. I didn’t even know where to start booking our first family holiday, Juliet took onboard all our needs and found us our dream trip. 5 star service for busy parents!
